Without any other knowledge about visual literacy the very first impression I am given when I see that image is junk food. I see a greasy hamburger, fried chicken, and a hotdog (which no one really know what those are made of.) Looking at the baby chicken I don’t really understand why it is in there with the rest of the junk food. The numbers, words and header of the message are overshadowed by the images.
Comparing this image to PAT I am able to see it a little differently. First I notice perception-gestalt, the whole is greater then its parts. There is an unequal balance between the food pictured and the words and numbers on the screen. I also notice proximity, as all of the parts are laid out from one another in individual section as opposed to one box with everything combined. For the action part of PAT I see repetition by using both a baby chick and the Kentucky Fried Chicken bucket. The individual boxes and their colors stand out to help them be noticed and to read the information in them. The alignment of the pictures I think is off and to large and detracts from the message that they want to portray. The tools used in this are very good. There is good use of color, plenty of dimension to make the food stand out against the words, and also symmetry between the words and spacing.
I think to enhance this picture they should have made the headliner bigger to really get across the fact that we eat a lot of protein, and reduce the pictures or use different visuals all together to convey how much protein we eat. I also feel that if they want to address our over eating of protein, it should not have been acquainted with junk food from restaurants, as I believe these are two completely different messages. The picture however does get your attention, does draw your eyes to it and with some reshaping I believe could give the message they are looking to give.
